Palais de Glace

Posadas 1725, Buenos Aires, The Pampas, C1112 ADE

Formerly an ice rink and dance hall, Palais de Glace (French for Ice Palace) is now an art gallery and library. Its permanent collection showcases contemporary Argentine art from the 19th century, while temporary exhibitions spotlight up-and-coming names in sculpture, photography, and painting.

The basics

The museum features more than 1,000 works of Argentine art. Palais de Glace is sometimes on walking tours of the Recoleta and Palermo Chico neighborhoods. It's near many attractions. Nearby, there's the spectacular Floralis Generica, a giant metal flower that opens and closes with the sun; the brutalist-style National Library of Argentina; the Museo de Bellas Artes, home to classical art spanning hundreds of years; and Recoleta Cemetery, a masterclass of intricately carved tombs and mausoleums.

Things to know before you go

  • Admission to the Palais de Glace is free.

  • The entire lower floor of the museum is accessible to people using wheelchairs.

  • You'll find plenty of dining options on the busy Avenida Libertador that runs parallel to the museum.

How to get there

Palais de Glace is conveniently located between Palermo and San Telmo. If you're staying in Palermo, take the 67 bus to Avenida de Libertador. If you're staying in San Telmo, you'll need the 130 bus. Hop-on hop-off buses stop nearby at Floralis Generalis.

When to get there

The museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday, from morning until evening. The best time to visit Buenos Aires is spring (October–December) and fall (March–May) when the city isn't plagued by inferno-like heat.

The best art galleries in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is chockablock full of culture. Another exceptional modern art museum is MALBA (Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires or Museo de Arte Lationoamericano de Buenos Aires), which focuses on modern Latin American art. Inside, there’s a self-portrait of Frida Kahlo, plus cutting-edge installations, sculptures, and paintings. For pieces spanning hundreds of years, head to Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, one of South America's largest public art collections.
