Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral

Bulevardul Regele Ferdinand I, Timișoara, Romania

Set on the south side of Timisoara’s historical center, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral is a colorful affair. This towering church's striped exterior and vividly patterned tiled roof help it make a strong first impression, enhanced by the cheerful flower beds of Victory Square leading up to it. Step inside for an ornate interior and compelling museum exhibitions.

Even in a city like Timisoara—full of vibrant and interesting architecture—the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral is a highlight. Walking tours and independent visitors mainly stop to admire the view of the cathedral, but visitors with more time should head inside to see its interior and museum of Romanian Orthodox relics and religious art. Afterward, continue through Victory Square to see the National Theater, Liberation Square, and Union Square, home to more impressive architecture.

  • Admission to the cathedral is free.

  • Religious services are held daily if you wish to attend.

  • A side entrance is accessible for people using wheelchairs who want to visit the cathedral's main hall.

  • The cathedral is a good attraction for history enthusiasts as it has historical ties to World War II and the 1989 Romanian revolution.

Located on Victory Square near the southern edge of Timisoara’s city center, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral can be reached on foot from most places in the historical center. It is also possible to reach it by taking the Nos. 1 or 2 tram to the Catedrala tram stop or the No. 33 bus to the Catedrala Mitropolitană.

The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral is open daily from early morning until early evening. However, the museum inside the cathedral is only open during business hours and is also closed on Sundays and Mondays. As church services are held each morning and late afternoon, it’s best to visit between these times if you want to walk around.

While the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral is iconic for its picturesque Moldavian architecture, many of Timisoara’s most impressive buildings are of the secessionist style. The best places to see buildings in this style are along Victory Square, near the cathedral, and around the sides of Union Square, with Brück House being a fantastic example.
