Old Trail Town
1831 Demaris Dr, Cody, WY
Cody’s Old Trail Town offers visitors a close-up look at Wyoming’s American Frontier history. It recreates an 18th-century Western ghost town featuring furnished log cabins, a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, and more. Inside each building are rare historical artifacts that bring this part of the past back to life. If you’re an American history buff, a few hours here goes by fast.
Because Old Trail Town is only open from May until September, it’s best to buy your tickets ahead of time so you’re not waiting in line at the attraction. Also, when you buy tickets in advance, they’re not for a set day, so you can use them any day that the attraction is open. Many travelers also like to combine other Wild West-themed attractions in Cody while they’re there, such as the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and the Cody Night Rodeo.
- Children five and under, and active military members can enter this Cody attraction for free.
- This outdoor museum in Cody doesn’t allow pets, food, or drinks to preserve the historic structures and materials.
- The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is just a 5-minute drive away and worth a visit—see Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley’s possessions and learn even more about the American West.
Driving to Old Trail Town from Downtown Cody is the easiest way to get there—head south on 16th Avenue and turn right on Sheridan Avenue. Next, continue onto 8th Street and then onto Yellowstone Avenue. Lastly, turn right on Demaris Drive, and you’re there. Although there’s no public transport that will take you to this attraction, some Cody bus tours will stop at the Old Trail Town.
Cody’s Old Trail Town is only open from mid-May through the end of September every year, so make sure you book a trip during that time frame. The summer offers the best weather in Wyoming; however, a May or September visit brings thinner crowds and a better chance to see wildlife in Cody. Even though the Old Trail Town is open until 6pm daily, new guests aren’t allowed inside after 5:30pm.
The East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park is just an hour’s drive from Cody’s Old Trail Town. You can either make your way to Yellowstone before or after exploring Cody attractions. Either way, you’re so close to the national park, that you’ll want to plan a few days there before your visit. If you want to see Old Faithful, that’s a 1.5-hour drive once you’re inside the park.
