New Mexico Mining Museum is 2 mi. w. off I-40 exit 85 at 100 N. Iron Ave. Exhibits chronicle the discovery of uranium on Haystack Mountain in 1950 by a local Navajo rancher, the subsequent transformation of Grants from farming community to mining town and the end of an era due to an early 1980s recession that forced the closure of mills and mines. Beneath the museum and reached by elevator is a replica of a mine complete with equipment. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
