POINT OF INTEREST

Nehru Zoological Park

NH 44, Bahadurpura, Hyderabad, Telangana

The expansive Nehru Zoological Park is considered to be one of India’s best zoos, thanks to its vast array of creatures living in a natural-like setting. This popular Hyderabad attraction is home to 193 species of animals and birds, including rhinos, lions, tigers, and elephants. Visitors can explore independently or join a Lion and Tiger Safari tour, which takes place in a secure vehicle that travels through the animals’ habitat.

Hyderabad is full of historic and cultural attractions, but the sprawling Nehru Zoological Park offers a break from the big-city vibes and is ideal if you’re traveling with kids. Here, you can spot many Indian birds and animals without needing to venture out into the wilderness on safari.

Most people visit the Nehru Zoological Park independently to explore at their own pace. It’s south of the city center, not far from the famous Charminar and the Old City, and you can easily combine a trip to the zoo with visiting this historic area.

  • Ticket prices are different depending on whether you visit on weekdays or weekends/holidays.
  • Safaris and rides are not included within the ticket price and cost extra.
  • Battery-operated vehicles and a toy train do circuits of the park, making it easy to get around for travelers with mobility issues or families with small kids.
  • Wheelchairs are available to borrow.
  • A multi-cuisine food court is on-site, so you don’t need to worry about bringing a picnic.

Nehru Zoological Park is beside the large Mir Alam Tank in Hyderabad’s south. It’s about 2 miles (3.3 kilometers) from the Charminar in the Old City. It’s easiest to travel by taxi if coming from other parts of Hyderabad.

The zoo is open from morning until late afternoon, every day of the week except Monday. Tickets are slightly cheaper on weekdays and there are fewer visitors, so plan a trip for Tuesday–Friday if you can. Most people prefer to visit Hyderabad between October and February, when the weather is cooler.

If you’d like to see Indian wildlife in a truly natural setting, there are some good options not far from Hyderabad. The Pakhal Lake and Wildlife Sanctuary is about 133 miles (215 kilometers) north of Hyderabad, while the Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary is about 180 miles (290 kilometers) away. To visit India’s most famous jungle national parks, you’ll need to hop over the border to Karnataka or Maharashtra.
