Narusawa Ice Cave

8533, Narusawa, Minamitsuru, Yamanashi

One of the most popular attractions in the Mount Fuji area provides quite a contrast to the volcanic mountain: it’s an underground ice cave. The Narusawa Ice Cave, formed by an ancient eruption, lies beneath the infamous Aokigahara Forest that spreads out around the base of Mount Fuji. Visitors can explore on a short circuit track.

The Narusawa Ice Cave contains some impressive features: ice pillars measuring 10 feet (3 meters) long, remains of trees that grew 1,100 years ago, and icicles formed by water drips from the cave’s ceiling. Visitors tour the cave by following a circuit loop shaped like a figure-8. The main attractions of the cave appear at different points along this loop track. You can visit independently or on a guided tour with several other sights in the Fuji area, including Lake Kawaguchiko and the Wind Cave.

  • The loop track in the cave is not very long–just 490 feet (150 meters)–and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. However, steep steps lead to and from the cave, so navigating these takes longer.

  • The average temperature in the cave is just 37°F (3°C), so bring a warm jacket or sweater, whatever the season.

  • Wear shoes appropriate for walking on slippery surfaces and up and down stairs. High heels are not recommended.

  • The cave has an entry fee, with a reduced price for kids and groups of 15 or more people.

Unless you’re on a guided tour of the Fuji area, the best way to reach the Narusawa Ice Cave is by taking a train from Tokyo or other regional stations to Kawaguchiko Station on the Fuji Kyuko Line. From there, take the free Retro bus for about 30 minutes, getting off at the Ice Cave or Wind Cave stop. You can get coupons for this free bus at Kawaguchiko Station; you can ride as much as you want for two days.

Ice may not be present in the cave when the weather is warmer. It’s best to visit in winter or spring to fully appreciate the cave’s ice formations, although the cave can provide a pleasantly cool retreat in the summer. The caves are open year-round, typically from mid-morning until late afternoon, with extended hours in summer.

Many visitors to the Narusawa Ice Cave also check out the nearby Fugaku Wind Cave. Located 650 feet (200 meters) underground, this cave has incredible lava formations, beautiful moss growth, and–eerily–voices don’t echo inside it as the basalt rock walls absorb sounds. Try it out! It’s about a 20-minute walk from the Ice Cave.
