POINT OF INTEREST

Nariño Palace (Casa de Nariño)

Carrera 8 No. 7 - 26, La Candelaria, Bogota, Cundinamarca

Set in historic La Candelaria, this neoclassical palace is the official home and office of the President of Colombia. It's an impressive sight from the outside, with its mix of grand columns and fountain features, while the interiors house elegant furnishings and oil paintings, many created by famous artists.

One of the best places to view the Nariño Palace is from the Plaza de Armas, an expansive square that sprawls out in front of the complex. Many walking tours of La Candeleria stop at the plaza to give visitors a bit of insight into Colombia’s political history. If you’d like to see the palace's interiors on one of the palace-run tours, you'll need to fill out a registration form in advance.

  • The palace is free to visit, and tours take around 45 minutes.

  • Large bags, cameras, and cell phones aren’t allowed in the building, and there are no locker facilities.

  • A dress code is enforced for those wishing to enter the palace, and if you're wearing shorts or flip-flops, you may be turned away.

The palace is situated in La Candelaria, within walking distance of many of the city's most popular attractions, including the Botero Museum and the Gold Museum. A number of bus lines stop near the palace, on both Calle 7 and Carrera 10, and most local taxi drivers will know where to take you if you mention the Casa de Nariño.

If you want to see the inside of the Nariño Palace, you'll need to join a guided tour. Tours take place twice daily in the afternoon on weekends and public holidays, and four times per day (twice in the morning, twice in the afternoon) on weekdays. If you opt for the last tour of the day on Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday, you'll also get to witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Many of Bogotá’s most important attractions can be found in La Candelaria, the city's historic old town. This hilly neighborhood, characterized by its Spanish colonial architecture and its narrow streets, is home to top museums such as the Botero Museum, the Mint Museum, and the Gold Museum. It's also a great place to stroll, either independently or on a walking tour, and to check out colorful street art.
