Nakupenda Beach

The basics

Nakupenda Beach is a popular stop on snorkeling tours, as it’s flanked by a beautiful coral reef. Both half-day and full-day options are available, many of which include guide services and snorkeling gear. Some tours to Nakupenda Beach also stop at Prison Island, known for its history and its giant tortoises. Other tours that stop at the beach and Prison Island include a walking tour of historic Stone Town.

• Nakupenda Beach is a must-visit for travelers who want to spend time in the sea.

• Towels aren’t typically included on tours, so bring your own.

• Make sure to wear reef-safe, waterproof sunscreen and bring plenty of drinking water.

How to get there

The only way to get to Nakupenda Beach is by boat, which means to visit the island, you’ll need to join a tour or book a boat to take you there. Both private and small-group options are available, and some include pickup from hotels in and around Stone Town or beyond.

When to get there

To avoid the crowds, your best bet is to visit Nakupenda Beach first thing in the morning. However, the temperatures are often better for swimming later in the day. The best time of year to visit the beach, and Zanzibar in general, is during the January­–February or June–October dry seasons.

Learn about sea turtles

If you're interested in ocean conservation, it's worth heading up to Nungwi Beach on the northern part of the island, to visit the Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium and Marine Turtle Conservation Lagoon. The aquarium supports turtle rehabilitation, providing rescue services to turtles that have been caught in fishing nets, as well as protection for baby sea turtles. It's a great place to learn about marine life while supporting local conservation efforts.
