POINT OF INTEREST

Museum of Death Hollywood

6031 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, California

As the name suggests, the Museum of Death is not for the faint of heart. This museum on a side street near the Hollywood Walk of Fame holds one of the world’s largest collections of serial killer art and notorious murder relics from around the world. Think of it as a repository of the grisly with an educational bent.

You can stop at this small museum before or after visiting the Hollywood Walk of Fame or Sunset Boulevard—and no reservation is required. Buy a ticket and brace yourself for close encounters with the macabre. See grim displays, such as the original crime scene and morgue photos from the Black Dahlia murder and the Heaven’s Gate Cult recruiting video. The pièce de résistance? A room dedicated to photos of the Charles Manson crime scenes.

  • Children are allowed to visit, but the museum contains graphic imagery and is best for mature audiences.

  • Photography of any kind, use of cell phones, large bags and backpacks, and food and drinks are not permitted inside.

  • Admission tickets are only available for purchase in person.

The museum is in the heart of Hollywood on Selma Avenue between Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard. Los Angeles is notorious for ubiquitous traffic—if you can take public transportation, which is recommended, the closest LA Metro stop is the Hollywood/Highland station servicing the B Line.

The museum is open seven days a week from late morning through evening and is rarely crowded. Keep in mind that the Hollywood Farmers Market, which typically runs nearby on Sunday mornings to mid-afternoons, can create parking issues and bring crowds to the neighborhood.

The Museum of Death’s website cautions visitors, particularly parents, about its mature subject matter. Kids are not prohibited from entering, but even adults may find some of the more ghastly exhibits—such as those with replicas of execution devices and autopsy instruments—to name a few, too much to bear. All things considered, the Museum of Death is not kid-friendly.
