Museum Meiji-Mura

1 Uchiyama, Inuyama, Aichi

The Meiji-Mura is an open-air museum in the Aichi Prefecture. This theme park-like attraction opened in 1965, allowing visitors to discover what life was like during the Meiji period, which spanned 1868 to 1912. Highlights of the museum include over 60 reconstructed Meiji period buildings—such as a sake brewery, a prison, a theater, and a hospital.

Numerous guided tours take travelers to the Meiji-Mura Museum, and a common starting point is Nagoya. Those wanting more flexibility may prefer a private and customizable tour instead of a shared tour. These private tours offer the opportunity to customize the route and select the stops visited. It’s usually possible to choose 3–4 sites in Nagoya or Aichi, such as Nagoya Castle, the Atsuta Jingu Shrine, the Meiji-Mura Museum, and the Nagoya City Science Museum.

  • The large size of the Meiji-Mura Museum means it takes at least half a day to explore its grounds and see all of its exhibits.

  • If you want memorable photos to remember your time in Japan, renting a kimono on-site is possible.

  • Paid parking is available at Meiji-Mura Museum.

  • The site is wheelchair-accessible, with accessible restrooms and baby changing facilities too.

  • The restaurant offers vegetarian options.

Meiji-Mura Museum is located in Inuyama, roughly an hour away from Nagoya by public transport. Simply get the Meitetsu-Inuyama Line from Nagoya Station to Inuyama Station. Then, transfer to a Meitetsu bus, which takes you directly to a stop called Meiji-Mura, which is right outside the museum.

The museum is open year-round, but hours vary (with slightly shorter opening hours during the winter months), and it may be closed on national holidays or for maintenance, so it’s always advisable to look up the schedule before visiting. Meiji-Mura tends to get busiest on weekends, so try to come during the week and in the morning to beat the crowds.

The Meiji period was an era in Japan’s history that lasted from 1868–1912. During this time, Japan was going through a significant period of change as it transformed from an isolated feudal society to a modernized and industrialized Japan influenced by Western culture. Areas of change included government reforms, education, legal restructuring, and the introduction of new technologies, food, clothing, philosophy, and lifestyle changes.
