Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center

2779 White Mountain Highway, North Conway, New Hampshire

Note: The Discovery Center is now closed.

Explore the science of weather and climate at the Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center. Located in downtown North Conway, this interactive science museum offers a range of fun and educational exhibits for all ages, as well as daily live connections to the weather station at the summit of Mt. Washington.

Discover the wonders of the atmosphere through hands-on exhibits at the weather center. Showing how weather patterns form and change, installations include a giant air cannon, a touchable tornado, wind room, and a boat pond that lets you control the wind. There's also a replica of the observatory’s original weather station, where 231 MPH (372 KPH) winds were recorded. You can deliver a weather forecast in a mini weather studio complete with a green screen, and chat with meteorologists at the summit weather station through the twice-daily live video connection.

The center also houses the Gladys Brooks Memorial Library, featuring an extensive collection relating to the White Mountains, the Arctic, and the Antarctic.

  • The weather center is located in town, and not on top of Mt. Washington.

  • Children age 6 and under can enter for free.

  • There’s a gift shop on-site.

  • The weather center is wheelchair accessible.

The weather center is located in North Conway Village, across the street from the Eastern Slope Inn. It’s located just off the Mount Washington Highway (New Hampshire Route 16). There’s free parking on-site.

The discovery center is now closed. The Gladys Brooks Memorial Library is open by appointment.

It’s possible to visit the Mount Washington Weather Station, located inside the Mount Washington State Park Sherman Adams Visitor Center, on top of the mountain at 6,288 feet (1,917 meters). The visitor center is generally open mid-May through mid-October, and tours are only available to members of the observatory.
