POINT OF INTEREST

Moss Glen Falls

Stowe, Vermont

Officially the tallest waterfall in Vermont at 85 feet (26 meters), Moss Glen Falls is a magnet for hikers throughout the year. Right outside the town of Stowe, the cascading falls and surrounding gorges can be reached by trails, with dramatic views and forested surroundings that make for an ideal nature escape.

A popular recreational destination, Moss Glen Falls are an easy drive from Vermont’s biggest hubs and offer an accessible dose of New England beauty.

To reach the falls, take the Moss Glen Falls Trail, a generally flat dirt and wooden boardwalk path, and pick between two routes at the fork: One takes you up to an observation area overlooking the waterfall, and one leads to the falls’ base. After you’ve soaked up the scenery, you can choose to continue along the full length of the 4-mile (6-kilometer) trail to really immerse yourself in nature.

  • Moss Glen Falls are free to visit, and no reservations are needed.
  • Be sure to come prepared with sun protection, water, layers, and hiking boots with good tread.
  • If you’re visiting in the winter, it’s advised to wear crampons or microspikes to navigate the icy trails.
  • Since the falls can only be reached by hiking trails, they’re not accessible to wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.
  • Take caution when approaching the pool at the fall’s base, since there can be loose stones and uneven ground; swimming is not recommended.

The Moss Glen Falls can be reached in about 10 minutes on the Moss Glen Falls Trail. To get to the trailhead, drive to 369-615 Moss Glen Falls Road in Stowe, less than 10 minutes from the town of Stowe, 40 minutes from Montpelier, and 50 minutes from Burlington. A small parking lot is on-site.

Moss Glen Falls are a popular, accessible destination with year-round appeal. Spring is a good time to visit, when snowmelt means the falls are particularly impressive. If you’re visiting in the winter, use caution, as the trail can be icy and slippery.

Another favorite natural sight in the Stowe area, Bingham Falls can be found at Mt. Mansfield State Park. Boasting churning falls, a vivid pool, forest scenery, and dramatic gorges, the landmark is another accessible day-trip destination (and worthy photoshoot subject).
