Montevideo Agricultural Market (Mercado Agrícola de Montevideo)

José L. Terra 2220, Montevideo, Departamento de Montevideo

Housed in a grand, early 20th-century market hall, Montevideo Agricultural Market (MAM) is one of the city’s largest and busiest markets, brimming with shops, stalls, and cafés. Restored and reopened in 2013, it’s a mainstay of Montevideo’s growing foodie scene, as well as a National Historic Monument known for its 100-year-old ironwork, central bell tower, and beautiful ceramic façade.

Whether you're exploring Montevideo’s historic landmarks, admiring the city’s architectural gems, or grabbing a bite to eat, Montevideo Agricultural Market is a top stop. Many sightseeing tours visit the market, point out local and specialty products, and offer info about the market’s history and architecture. Leave time to stroll the shops and stalls, which sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to Uruguayan wines, coffee, and chocolate, and handicrafts and souvenirs.

  • The MAM is a great choice for lunch or dinner and has a parrilla (steakhouse), a craft brewery, and various street food-style restaurants, bakeries, and coffee houses.

  • The market also has restrooms, an ATM, a currency exchange, and free Wi-Fi.

  • The market hall is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

The MAM is located along José L. Terra in the Villa Muñoz neighborhood, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) north of downtown Montevideo. It’s a good 30-minute walk from town, so hop in a taxi or take one of the many buses that stop outside. Most city sightseeing buses make a stop at the market.

The market hall is open daily from morning through late evening, but the opening times of individual shops, stalls, and restaurants may vary. Most restaurants serve from early lunch to closing, with last orders about an hour before closing, making this a good spot for lunch, dinner, or an afternoon coffee break. It’s busiest at weekends, especially Saturdays, and there’s often live music and entertainment in the evenings.

In-the-know foodies will have seen Montevideo work its way onto the international radar in recent years. Top chef Lucia Soria’s restaurant, Jacinto, was voted among the World’s Best Restaurants by Food & Wine magazine, and local institutions Café Misterio and Tinkal Bar consistently rank among traveler’s favorites. For a more modern food hall experience, there’s also Mercado Ferrando, or you can tuck into traditional fare at Los Leños then treat yourself to the delicious baked goods on offer at Escaramuza Library café.
