Mondragón Palace (Palacio de Mondragon)

Plaza Mondragó, Ronda, Málaga

Suspected to be the one-time residence of King Abomelic, the last Moorish ruler of Ronda, Mondragón Palace is an example of traditional Mudéjar architecture found throughout Andalusia. Perched atop El Tajo Gorge, the palace has been renovated many times over the centuries and today features a mishmash of architectural styles.

After the reconquest of Ronda in 1485, the palace was presented to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Despite its mix of architectural styles, including blank slabs of concrete poured during Francisco Franco’s regime, the palace features detailed craftsmanship typically found in Mudéjar constructions. The best examples of this are found in Moorish wall tiles and intricately-carved wood ceilings. A traditional Mudéjar courtyard is complete with a still functioning, colorfully tiled fountain.

  • The palace offers sweeping views of the countryside, including the distant Sierra de las Nieves.
  • A small museum on the second floor (Museum of Ronda and the Serrania) showcases local history and archaeology.
  • The palace is a local highlight great for history buffs and families.

The palace is located in Ronda’s old town. Walk south across the Puente Nuevo along Calle Armiñán toward Calle Tenorio. You’ll make a slight left on Plaza de María Auxiliadora before turning left onto Calle Sor Angela de la Cruz. Turn right onto Plaza Mondragón and the palace will be on your right.

Mondragón Palace is open 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, and 10am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday.

The beautiful arch bridge that connects the two different sides of Ronda hovers over a 120-meter-deep chasm above the Guadalevín River. It’s also a great spot to snap a picture of the Anadalusian countryside.
