POINT OF INTEREST

Monchique

Monchique, Faro

Dominating the landscape on the border between the Algarve and Alentejo regions is the Sierra de Monchique, a forest-covered mountain range. The small town of Monchique is hidden within the hills, offering visitors a look into rural life in the region.

Aside from being a charming mountain town, Monchique is also known for its natural springs, which are said to have healing properties. The Romans certainly believed in the water’s properties; they built a spa at nearby Caldas de Monchique, and gave the area its name, Mons Cicus, or “ring of mountains”. The Portuguese royal family also once came here to enjoy the spa waters. Today you can still visit Caldas de Monchique to try the healing waters for yourself.

From birdwatching tours to guided hikes and trips to see other historic towns in the region such as Silves, there’s plenty to enjoy in this pristine mountain environment. To take it easy, simply stroll the steep cobbled streets of the town browsing the stores selling local crafts before stopping for a lunch of grilled Piri-Piri chicken, a local speciality.

  • There are several hotels offering wheelchair-friendly accommodation in the town.
  • The spas are open to the public (via paid ticket)
  • Try the local liqueur—medronho—distilled from the berries of the medrono tree (also known as the strawberry tree).
  • If you plan to hike in the mountains make sure you wear proper footwear and take water and sunscreen with you.

Monchique town is in the Sierra de Monchique mountains, a 1-hour drive from the closest international airport in Faro. The easiest way to reach the town is by car or taxi transfer from the airport. There is a public bus that joins the town of Monchique with Portmão on the coast.

Up in the mountains, the weather in Monchique is often slightly cooler than on the coast. For hiking, spring and fall are ideal as the days are cooler. Summer is great for enjoying the town or visiting while on a vacation on the coast. In winter the town is usually very quiet.

Nature-lovers should make time to explore the green mountains of the Sierra de Monchique, where hiking trails will take you past waterfalls and cork forests and offer great views all the way to the coast. The area is also a popular bird-watching region with kestrels, woodpeckers, short-toed eagles and rock buntings are just a few of the species you can find in the region.
