Momochi Seaside Park
2 Chome-902-1, Momochihama, Sawara Ward, Fukuoka, 814-0001
You’ll see Momochi Seaside Park long before you get there, thanks to the 767-foot (234-meter) high Fukuoka Tower that stands within the waterside development. Created in 1989 for the Asia Pacific Expo, the park contains a sandy beach, an artificial island (Marizon), the Fukuoka City Museum, and more. You can also catch a ferry over to the larger Uminonakamichi Seaside Park from Marizon.
The basics
Fukuoka is a city that features an array of self-contained developments and entertainment complexes, including Canal City Hakata, Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, and Momochi Seaside Park. If you do nothing else in Fukuoka, head to the observation deck of the Fukuoka Tower, the city’s tallest building, for great panoramic views. If the weather’s hot, as it often is in Fukuoka, cool off with a swim at Momochihama Beach.
Travelers usually visit independently, as guided tours of the Fukuoka area tend to focus on attractions beyond the central city, but you can include Momochi Seaside Park on some private guided tours.
Things to know before you go
- Entrance to Momochihama Beach is free, but many other businesses at the park are ticketed. Entrance to the Fukuoka City Museum is relatively inexpensive.
- Baseball fans might want to get a ticket to see the local team, the SoftBank Hawks, play at the Fukuoka PayPay Dome, which has a retractable roof.
- As well as generally being safe for swimming, you can play volleyball and soccer on the beach here.
How to get there
Momochi Seaside Park is located at the waterfront area of downtown Fukuoka. The closest subway stations are Fujisaki, Nishiji, and Tojinmachi Stations on the Airport Line, about a 15–20 minute walk from the park. If you prefer not to walk, catch a bus from Tenjin Station (10–20 minutes) or Hakata Station (20–30 minutes).
When to get there
The different attractions and businesses at Momochi Seaside Park have varying hours of operation, but Momochihama Beach is accessible around the clock. The Fukuoka Tower is usually open daily from mid morning until late evening, while the Fukuoka City Museum’s hours are from mid morning until early evening. Restaurants typically open their doors from late morning until late evening.
Visit Uminonakamichi Seaside Park
The ferry terminal on Marizon connects Momochi Seaside Park with Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, a huge entertainment area on a peninsula. There are flower gardens, cycle trails, playgrounds, sports fields, a water park, an aquarium, a zoo, and more. Ferries take about 20 minutes and depart roughly every two hours, but more frequently at busy times.
