Centrally located, Berlin’s Mitte (which means “middle”) is a great base from which to explore the city’s historical and cultural center, as the bulk of the city's most famous attractions like Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, and Museum Island are in this neighborhood. High-end shopping streets and excellent restaurants, cafés and bars round out the reasons to visit.
Along with the Berlin Wall (Mitte used to be entirely in East Berlin), must-see sites in Mitte are Brandenburg Gate, the city’s sole surviving gate and a symbol of the division that held for decades; the Reichstag Building, the seat of the German government; Museum Island, an area with several of the city’s most popular and important museums are located:xa0 the Pergamon, Bode, Altes, Alte Nationalgalerie, and Neues museums. Shoppers will enjoy Friedrichstrasse, Berlin’s most famous shopping strip, and Hackescher Markt, where boutiques focus on local designers.

Mitte is a 15-square-mile (39-square-kilometer) neighborhood located in the very middle of Berlin. Travelers taking public transport, hop on the U-Bahn line 6 to the Berlin Friedrichstrasse stop and walk about 3 minutes to the theater. Within Mitte is also Alexanderplatz, a large square and public transportation hub with many shopping options.
Travelers have plenty to do in Mitte, day or night, depending on activity and interest. In general, the best time to visit Berlin is the spring (though it’s quite rainy, especially in May and June) and the summer month, especially for the legendary Love parade in July. Rates are lower in the fall and winter when temperatures drop.
Underneath the GDR-era TV Tower in Mitte is the earliest settlement of Berlin, dating back to 1200, and a tiny place of fascination. After the heavy bombing of World War II, Nikolaiviertel was in dire straits like the rest of the city. But in 1979, faithfully restored the little charming buildings and cobblestone streets to their original state.
