Milan Monumental Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale di Milano)

Piazzale Cimitero Monumentale, Milan, ITA

Built in 1866, Milan’s Monumental Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale) is the 2nd-largest cemetery in the city and the final resting place of wealthy folks and families including the Brunis, Bernocchis, and Camparis. The vast cemetery is an open-air museum featuring Italian sculptures, elaborate obelisks, and massive tombs commemorating the dead.

Upon entering the enormous cemetery complex, there is a type of Hall of Fame that displays the most renowned Italian architects, writers, actors, composers, and journalists who are buried there. Wander around and admire the stones, statues, and tombs that comprise a veritable outdoor sculpture garden.

To get the most out of your experience, book a guided walking tour of the cemetery grounds. If you’d rather explore on your own, many Milan hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses stop at the Monumental Cemetery.

  • The Monumental Cemetery is a must-visit for architecture and art history lovers.

  • Entry to the cemetery is free.

  • The cemetery is quite large, so get a map or plan out the tombs you would like to visit before setting out.

  • Bring a water bottle and comfortable shoes to explore the huge complex.

  • Free guided tours are available to book either online or at the entrance to the cemetery.

The cemetery is located near Milan’s Chinatown and Porto Garibaldi districts. Take the M2 (green) metro line to Garibaldi or the M5 (purple) to Monumentale. Tram lines 2, 4, 10, 12, 14, and 33, and bus 94, also reach the cemetery.

The Monumental Cemetery is open from 8am to 6pm Tuesday through Sunday. Consider a spring or autumn visit, as the hot summer months of June, July, and August, and the winter months of January and February, can be quite harsh for walking around.

The Monumental Cemetery is an homage to the wealthy residents of Milan. As you walk around the complex, admire the various monuments, statues, and opulent mausoleums home to both Catholics and non-Catholics. Don’t miss the bronze sculpture of theLast Supper by Giannino Castiglioni and the Temple of Fame, home to many Milanese celebrities.
