Mengler Hill Lookout

Menglers Hill Road, Bethany, South Australia

Mengler Hill Lookout is a popular stop during Barossa Valley wine tasting excursions, providing a scenic panorama of the famed valley below. Mengler Hill Lookout was named for one of the area's early wine growers, and since 1988 has the added attraction of large granite and marble sculptures at the adjacent Barossa Sculpture Park.

Mengler Hill Lookout (formerly Menger’s Hill) offers a little something for everyone. A beautiful view to the valley below, a scenic spot to take a group picture, a diversion from visiting wineries, and a place to wander in the open air. While the lookout does not provide any amenities, the large parking lot is connected to a walking path that heads downhill, dotted with large scale rock sculptures of the Barossa Sculpture Park.

  • The parking lot is large and able to accommodate heavy use, including tourist buses.

  • Several excellent Barossa Valley wineries are in the vicinity, including Lindsay Wine Estate and Rockford Wines.

  • There is a short walking path that leads to the Sculpture Park where you can stretch your legs, or let children and pets get some energy out.

  • There are no restrooms, picnic tables, or seating at Mengler Hill Lookout.

Menglers Hill Road, which leads to the lookout, is between Tanunda and Angaston off Lightpass Road. Starting on Basedow Road in Tanunda, you'll be forced to make a turn onto Lightpass Road. Menglers Hill Road will be on the right, just after you pass Seabrook Wines. At the road's end, park and take in the view.

Late morning, with the sun behind you, offers the best visibility for the 180 degree panorama on Tanunda and Bethany below. This viewpoint is a great showcase of seasonal change, making every visit a new experience. In fall you can witness the richly colored leaves of the changing vines and in spring, the bright green of new growth.

Barossa Valley hosted the first Barossa International Sculpture Symposium in 1988, inviting nine sculptors to carve interpretations of the area with local marble and granite. Twenty years later, eight additional artists took part, and today the Barossa Sculpture Park boasts over a dozen works of super sized, abstract art that cascade down the hill from the lookout parking lot.
