Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917

Berten Pilstraat 5A, Zonnebeke, Flanders, 8980

The Memorial Museum of Passchendaele 1917 is devoted to one of World War I’s bloodiest offensives—the Battle of Passchendaele. Housed in a Norman-style château in the Belgian village of Zonnebeke, it uses artifacts, memorabilia, and reconstructions to chronicle the battle, those who fought in it, and how the conflict came to epitomize WWI’s misery and senselessness.

The basics

Standing in park-like gardens, the Memorial Museum provides a comprehensive account of the fighting at Passchendaele, which had 500,000 fatalities, and the wider trench warfare around Ypres. You can view diaries, photographs, films, and multimedia presentations before exploring recreated trenches and dugouts.

Explore the museum independently with or without an audio guide. The museum is a major stop on WWI battlefield tours, which typically start from cities such as Bruges, Brussels, Ypres, and Lille. They also tend to cover war sites such as Ypres’ Menin Gate, Tyne Cot, and Sanctuary Wood, letting you visit multiple locations without transport stress. Options vary from private and group day trips to multi-day excursions and itineraries focused on the roles of different Allied forces, such as Australian and Canadian regiments.

Things to know before you go

  • Allow 1.5-2.5 hours at the museum.

  • The museum is largely wheelchair friendly and accessible for those with reduced mobility, hearing, or vision. The trenches are only partially accessible to people who use wheelchairs.

  • On-site amenities include a café, shop, and restrooms.

How to get there

The museum is at Berten Pilstraat 5A in Zonnebeke, around 4.5 miles (7 kilometers) east of Ypres. If driving from Ypres, take the N332 toward Potijz, turn right onto Berten Pilstraat, and use the free car park. Alternatively, take a cab or bus from Ypres. The 94 bus reaches Zonnebeke in around 20 minutes and stops at Zonnebeke Plaats, a 5-minute walk from the museum.

When to get there

The museum is typically open daily 10am-5:30pm, although it’s closed annually from around December 16 to January 31. Visitors swell between June and September, particularly at weekends, and also again around Armistice Day on November 11. To bypass the crowds, visit during other months and on weekdays–the quietest times are before noon and after 3pm Monday-Friday.

Other sights around the Memorial Museum Passchendaele

After visiting the museum, explore its peaceful grounds. Stroll the poppy-shaped memorial gardens and follow the nature trails in the surrounding forest. Other war sites beckon from nearby: walk among the 12,000 graves of Tyne Cot Cemetery, just 2 miles (3 kilometers) away, and visit Polygon Wood to the south, where many Australian soldiers lost their lives in the fall of 1917.
