Maritime Museum of Tasmania

16 Argyle St., Hobart, Tasmania

As an island state, Tasmania’s history is inextricably bound to the water, and the Maritime Museum of Tasmania dives deep into this heritage. Its collections explore how the sea has impacted the populations who have lived here throughout history, from Aboriginal peoples to European whalers to modern-day residents.

Housed within the historic Carnegie Building, the Maritime Museum of Tasmania displays model ships, maritime artifacts, paintings, and images from throughout the island's history. Visitors can see models of the ships that docked at Sullivans Cove, hear the stories of the men who sailed in them, learn about Australia’s first explorers, and see the navigational instruments they used.

*The Maritime Museum is a must for history buffs and families traveling with kids.

*Plan to spend at least 45 minutes touring the museum collection.

*The museum is wheelchair accessible.

The Maritime Museum of Tasmania is in the Carnegie Building on Argyle Street, across from Constitution Dock on Hobart’s historic waterfront. It’s within walking distance of many other attractions and accommodations.

The Maritime Museum is open daily, from morning to the start of the evening, except Christmas Day.

A highlight of the museum collection is the SV May Queen, Australia’s oldest sail trading vessel and one of the few remaining seaworthy wooden vessels from the era. Built in 1867, the ship is moored at Constitution Dock and open for visits on most Saturday mornings and Thursday afternoons.
