POINT OF INTEREST

Maria Luisa Park

Paseo de las Delicias, Seville, ESP

Set south of Seville’s historic center, this large green space was once the private garden of the nearby Palace of San Telmo before it was given over for public use in 1893. The park is crisscrossed by tree-lined avenues and dotted with fountains, and is also home to Plaza de España, an extravagant plaza built for the 1989 world’s fair.

Maria Luisa Park is the city’s main park and is included as a stop-off on almost all sightseeing tours of Seville, whether conducted on foot, by bike, or Segway. Being just a short stroll from the historic center, the park is typically visited alongside other major Seville attractions such as the Royal Alcázar of Seville (Real Alcázar de Sevilla), Seville Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María de la Sede), and the Seville Bullring (Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza de Cabellería de Sevilla). There are lots of shaded paths ideal for strolling, but if the heat makes walking a little too hard, you may want to hitch a ride through the park on a horse-drawn carriage instead.

*Maria Luisa Park is a must for sightseers hoping to escape the bustle of town.

  • The park is big and it’s easy to miss parts of it; consider a guided tour to ensure you see all the highlights.
  • Find two museums within the park—the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions—both of which offer interesting exhibits and respite from the heat.

Maria Luisa Park sits just south of Seville’s Historic Center (Centro Historico de Sevilla). The park is about a 10-minute walk from San Bernardo station (served by metro line #1 and trains), and Puerta de Jerez station (served by metro line #1).

Summers in Seville are sweltering and while the leafy greenery of the park provides shade, it can still be extremely hot. Between June and September, arrive at the park in the morning before temperatures soar, or come in the evening when they begin to drop.

Situated at the northeastern edge of the park, this semicircular plaza was constructed for the Ibero-American Exposition in 1929. The plaza is nothing if not elaborate with Renaissance and Moorish-style buildings, and heavily embellished bridges, fountains, and alcoves—all decorated with colorful tile work.
