Marble Palace (Marmorpalais)

Im Neuen Garten 10, Potsdam, DEU

The only surviving early neo-classic Prussian palace, Potsdam’s Marble Palace was commissioned by King Frederick William II in the late 1700s and remained a royal residence until the early 20th century. Now, it’s a museum with beautifully preserved interiors. Highlights include marble fireplaces from Italy, Wedgwood vases, and grandfather clocks from Parisian trendsetter Madame de Pompadour.

Potsdam is a popular day trip location from Berlin. For maximum flexibility and door-to-door transport, opt for a private tour. As well as visiting the Marble Palace, tour itineraries often showcase other regal buildings such as the UNESCO-listed Sanssouci Palace and Cecilienhof Palace. If you’re already in Potsdam, visit the Marble Palace as part of a private walking tour that includes admission tickets.

  • The ground floor of the Marble Palace is wheelchair-accessible; a lifting platform helps you access the entrance.

  • Strollers aren’t allowed in the exhibition rooms for conservation reasons.

  • There are a limited number of lockers available at the palace.

  • The last admission is typically 30 minutes before closing time.

  • There are multiple restaurants nearby, including Cafe Cecilie in the palace courtyard.

It’s easy to get to the Marble Palace by tram. Just get line 96 from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof in the direction of Potsdam, Jungfernsee until you get to Potsdam, Puschkinallee. It’s then a 15-minute walk to the palace. Alternatively, you can get a taxi from Potsdam’s main train station to the palace in 20 minutes.

The palace's opening hours change with the seasons, so check the schedule before you visit. From November to April, it's generally open only on weekends. However, from May through October, it welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, typically from mid-morning to late afternoon. To minimize crowds, aim to arrive early in the day, preferably on weekdays rather than weekends.

After exploring the Marble Palace, continue your Potsdam adventure with a stroll to the Dutch Quarter. Here, red-brick buildings line the streets, housing charming cafés such as Café Guam and Lekker Koffie. For movie buffs, Babelsberg Film Park offers an exciting glimpse into the film industry. Alternatively, if you're keen on more palaces, both Sanssouci and Cecilienhof Palaces are close.
