Manchester Cathedral

Victoria Street, Manchester, GBR

The Grade I listed Manchester Cathedral is one of the city’s oldest and most important religious landmarks. With origins dating back to 1421, the soaring cathedral was constructed in the English Gothic style, and later renovated during the Victorian period and following World War II. Today, the landmark is celebrated for its striking interior.

Formerly known as the Cathedral of St. Mary, St. Denys, and St. George, the Manchester Cathedral has centuries of history behind it. Though the structure that stands today traces its earliest origins to the 15th century, churches have been hosted on-site for far longer: one highlight of the cathedral is the Angel Stone, which dates to the year 700. Other must-sees include its carved misericords and its modern stained-glass windows.

The Manchester Cathedral can be seen during a walking tour of the city, or by taking a hop-on, hop-off bus tour. It’s also simple to plan an independent visit.

  • Admission to the cathedral is free for all visitors.

  • The Manchester Cathedral Visitor Centre includes additional information about the landmark, and displays the remnants of the medieval Hanging Bridge.

  • The Explorer Trail offers an engaging way for children to discover the cathedral.

  • There is a small charge if you wish to take personal photos at the cathedral, whether via camera or smartphone.

  • There is level entry to the Manchester Cathedral, and wheelchair users should be able to access the building without difficulty.

  • Free 30-minute guided tours are held throughout the week, and more extensive guided tours can also be arranged in advance.

  • Manchester Cathedral has a café that's open daily, and serves afternoon tea and other nibbles; reservations can be made in advance.

Manchester Cathedral is just steps from Manchester Victoria station, which is served by mainline trains. It can also be reached by the Manchester Metrolink: Take the Pink Line to Exchange Square or the Yellow, Green, or Navy Line to Shudehill. You can also opt to walk, drive, or bike to the cathedral.

Manchester Cathedral is open daily, but opening hours vary throughout the week and may change during school holidays and when events are being held. If visiting during a service, please keep noise and conversations to a minimum.
