One of Málaga’s most popular attractions, the Alcazaba is an atmospheric Moorish palace and fortress with ornamental gardens. Take in panoramic views of the city as you marvel at the ingenious design tricks the Moors used to protect their stronghold.
One of the most important Moorish monuments still standing in Spain, the nearly-1,000-year-old Alcazaba stretches along a hilltop above Málaga. Join a guided walking tour to learn more about the history and architecture of the palace and nearby sights such as the Roman Theater. Málaga is close to several other cities with a Moorish past (Granada, Seville, and Córdoba), and it’s easy to visit them all on the same vacation.
With its many steps and steep paths, the Alcazaba isn’t suitable for travelers with limited mobility.

Located on a hill at the edge of Málaga’s historic district, the Alcazaba is reachable on foot from the city center. Or, go as part of a guided city tour that includes transport. Public buses also serve the entire city.
The Alcazaba is open year-round except on major public holidays. Admission is free on Sunday afternoons, and weekends and the summer months are the busiest times to visit. Málaga’s Mediterranean climate is pleasant at any time of the year.
Perched high above the Alcazaba is another Moorish attraction, the Castillo de Gibralfaro, built on the site of a former Phoenecian stronghold. Stroll along the castle ramparts for a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding area—and imagine what it must have been like to stand guard there, looking out for approaching enemy ships.
