Magnetic Termite Mounds

Litchfield Park Road, Litchfield Park, Northern Territory

In Litchfield National Park in Northern Australia, you’ll come across a strange sight. Hundreds of 6-foot (2-meter) flat, broad structures clutter a wide, bare plain. The monuments are not man-made—they belong to Magnetic Termites, so named because the construction of their mounds aligns with the compass.

To keep cool in the infamous Australian heat, the termites build their mounds so that the narrow edges face north and south, and their flat, wide backs face east and west. It’s a popular spot for visitors to Litchfield National Park—a boardwalk with viewing platforms winds through the mounds to let you get up close; you’ll also spot the even larger Cathedral Termite mounds which tower at 16 feet (5 meters) tall. Day trips to Litchfield National Park often combine the mounds with refreshing swim spots such as Berry Springs and Wangi Falls.

  • Pack plenty of water and sunscreen—make like a termite, and be smart about the heat.

  • Litchfield National Park is filled with swimming holes and rivers, so pack a swimsuit.

  • Termites can bite if threatened, so don’t attempt to pick up any insects.

From Darwin, it’s a 1.5-hour drive to Litchfield National Park via National Highway 1. Follow signage onto Litchfield Park Road until you find the car park. If you don’t have your own vehicle or you’re uncomfortable driving on the left side of the road, Litchfield National Park is a popular spot for nature tours departing from Darwin.

The dry season from May to October tends to be the most comfortable time of year to visit—the humidity and temperature both drop, and there’s less chance of rainstorms. Visit the termite mounds themselves early to avoid the peak heat, and spend the morning wandering to a refreshing swimming hole where you can swim through the afternoon heat.

Litchfield National Park is huge, with plenty of hidden gems to explore. Opt to make a longer trip by booking one of the many campsites throughout the park and spend some time swimming, hiking, and keeping an eye out for wildlife. Waterfalls, lush greenery, and craggy rocks make for a picture-perfect destination.
