Lovcen National Park

Cetinje

High in the Dinara Alps in Montenegro, encompassing Mount Lovćen and its surroundings, Lovćen National Park is known for its beautiful views and its diverse flora and fauna. It's also the site of the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, a poet and philosopher who once served as Montenegro's ruling Prince-Bishop.

Visiting Lovćen National Park requires renting a car or joining a tour. Many tours to the park leave from Kotor, and some start with Kotor city tours before heading out to the mountainous park. Tours from the Montenegrin capital city, Podgorica, are also available. Many tours include a stop at Cetinje—the erstwhile royal capital of Montenegro—and to Skadar Lake, a popular spot for relaxed boat trips. Some tours also include meals of traditional local food as well as wine tastings.

  • Wear sunscreen and plenty of layers, as the park can be simultaneously sunny and cold.

  • The mausoleum is at the end of a 461-step walkway, so wear comfortable shoes.

  • You can have your photo taken in period costume right in front of the entrance to the Njegoš Mausoleum for a small fee.

  • There are restaurants and hotels in the resort town of Ivanova Korita on the southern end of the park.

Lovćen National Park is about a 25-minute drive from Cetinje or a 40-minute drive from Kotor. The best way to get there is by renting a car or joining a tour that includes round-trip transportation.

The best time to visit the park is during the summer, when the weather is warm enough for outdoor activities, but still pleasantly cool compared to other parts of the region. Winters can be frigid, with sub-freezing temperatures. The Njegoš Mausoleum is open daily.

If the views from the Njegoš Mausoleum aren't enough, head over to Ostrog Monastery (Manastir Ostrog), a 17th-century monastery that serves as an important pilgrimage site for people from Montenegro. It's set at an elevation of around 2,950 feet (900 meters), offering fantastic views over the Zeta Valley. Highlights include the Church of the Presentation, which is adorned with 17th-century frescoes, and a smaller cave church.
