Levine Center for the Arts

550 S Tryon St., Charlotte, North Carolina

Located in the heart of Uptown, the Levine Center for the Arts is the premier arts and culture destination in Charlotte. The center comprises three museums and a performing arts center: the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture, Mint Museum Uptown, and Knight Theater.

Visitors can view more than 1,400 pieces of 20th-century art at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, one of the most comprehensive collections celebrating Black art and culture at Harvey B. Gantt Center, and American and contemporary art at the Mint Museum. The Knight Theater hosts concerts, operas, symphonies, and Broadway shows. Some museums offer guided tours. A number of Charlotte sightseeing tours—including by bike, golf cart, and Segway—pass by the center.

  • The center is a must-visit for art and culture lovers.

  • Each venue charges a different fee for performances, special events, or entrance, with free admission for children and active military in some cases. A center arts pass offers entry to all three museums.

  • Museum shops can be found inside the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the Mint Museum, and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture.

  • A restaurant is located inside the Mint Museum.

The Levine Center for the Arts is located on South Tryon Street between Stonewall Street and West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Parking options include garages, surface lots, and metered spaces, with discounted parking at the center’s garage below Duke Energy Center. The nearest LYNX light rail stop is 3rd Street/Convention Center, while Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) bus routes 2, 16, 18, and 19 stop nearby.

Different venues have different hours of operation, though most museums are open during the day, and performances at the Knight Theater usually take place in the evening. Free museum admission and live performances are available Wednesdays from 5pm to 9pm. The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture and Mint Museum are closed on Mondays, while the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is closed on Tuesdays.

Uptown Charlotte is full of attractions that will appeal to a wide range of visitors. Bordering the Levine Center for the Arts is The Green, a small, literary-themed park. Also nearby are the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Romare Bearden Park, the Charlotte Convention Center, AvidXChange Music Factory, and Queen City Quarter, a retail and entertainment complex.
