POINT OF INTEREST

Launceston City Park

45-55 Tamar St., Launceston, Tasmania, 7250

Launceston City Park, a historic patch of green in the town’s heart, was developed by the local horticultural society in the 1820s. Today, the gardens are a tranquil oasis of European and native trees, with a duck pond, Victorian fountain, conservatory, playground, bandstand, and a Japanese macaque enclosure gifted from Japan.

The basics

Launceston City Park is widely considered one of the best public parks in Australia, and for good reason. Visitors can see horticultural displays within the John Hart Conservatory, observe Japanese macaques gifted by Launceston’s sister city of Ikeda, take a kid-friendly train ride around the grounds, or breathe in floral scents in the Senses Garden. A series of monuments throughout the park honor important figures from Launceston’s history.
