Lancelin Sand Dunes

For those road-tripping up the coast of Western Australia, perhaps from Perth to Exmouth, a stop in Lancelin is easy and convenient. Visiting Lancelin from Perth on an organized day trip often includes additional attractions such as Caversham Wildlife Park, the Pinnacles Desert, or the Swan Valley wine region. Once there, sandboards can be rented in town for your own sandboarding enjoyment.

• There is no admission fee to the sand dunes.
• There are no restroom facilities at the dunes.
• It’s recommended that you wear sunglasses or other eye protection when sandboarding.
• Most rental car companies don’t allow their 2-wheel-drive vehicles to be taken off road, so stay on the paved roads or rent a 4-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle.
• Driving over the dunes, even in a 4WD, can be dangerous, so don’t attempt if you are a novice.
• Bring plenty of sun protection and water, as the dunes are exposed to Western Australia’s intense sun and heat (in the summer months).

Lancelin is 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of Perth via state highways 2 and 60. The sand dunes don’t have a street address, but the Lancelin visitor website provides directions to the entry point if you need them.

The sand dunes are open daily from morning to evening. Avoid the middle of the day to skip the worst of the heat; morning and evening also offer better light for photos.

A group of limestone rock formations inside Nambung National Park, the Pinnacles are located a little more than two hours north of Perth and are one of the most popular day trip destinations from the city, with some tours stopping at the Lancelin Sand Dunes either before or afterward. Jutting up from the arid landscape, the Pinnacles are known for their otherworldly look.
