POINT OF INTEREST

La Geria

Lanzarote, Lanzarote, 35570

Famed for its rugged volcanic landscapes and sweet Malvasia grapes, La Geria is Lanzarote’s flagship wine region. Wine lovers come not only to sample the distinctive wines but to explore the unusual vineyards, where the vines are grown in volcanic rock pits dug into the black sand.

The basics

Wine lovers can follow the La Geria wine route, stopping to visit the vineyards and enjoy wine tasting at the bodegas (wineries) along the way. La Geria is best known for its white wines and popular wineries include the family-run Bodega La Geria, Lanzarote’s oldest winery Bodegas El Grifo, and Bodega Los Bermejos, one of the few wineries that produces red wines.

A highlight of tours is the chance to walk around the vineyards and learn about the traditional grape-growing methods. Each vine is planted in a zoco—individual 3-foot (1-meter) deep pits, protected from the elements by a semi-circular stone wall—which helps to draw and maintain moisture in the fertile volcanic soil. Lanzarote sightseeing tours and day trips often include a winery visit and wine tasting in La Geria, typically en route to the neighboring Timanfaya National Park.

Things to know before you go

  • Even non-wine drinkers can enjoy a trip to La Geria. The volcanic landscapes, dotted with vines and stone arches, are popular among hikers and photographers.
  • There is little to no shade at the vineyards, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.
  • The legal drinking age in Lanzarote is 18 but many tours are open to families and children.
  • The uneven volcanic terrain can make access tricky for wheelchairs and strollers so it’s worth checking ahead for access requirements.

How to get there

La Geria is located in central Lanzarote, just south of the Timanfaya National Park. It’s about a 7-mile (11-kilometer) or 15-minute drive north of Puerto del Carmen. There is no public transport to the area so you will need your own transport or to join a tour.

When to get there

Wine tours and tastings are possible year round, although some wineries may be closed in the winter. The Liquid Sounds (Sonidos Liquidos) festival, which combines live music with wine and food tastings, is held in La Geria each June, with bands and artists performing on an open-air stage set up amid the vineyards.

Hiking Lanzarote’s Volcanic Landscapes

Hikers will find plenty of trails for exploring Lanzarote, from easy coastal walks to challenging mountain hikes. The La Geria vineyards make a scenic destination for trekking, with trails leading from the village of Uga and looping around the volcanic craters of Montaña Tinasoria and Montaña Guardilama. Other popular hikes include climbing the summit of the Caldera Blanca volcano in the Timanfaya National Park; walking around the base of Montaña Roja in Playa Blanca; and the cliff walk at Famara Beach.
