POINT OF INTEREST

La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park (Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de la Garrotxa)

Avinguda de Santa Coloma, 47, Olot, Girona

Discover the hidden gem of Girona at La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, which boasts over 12,000 hectares (29,650 acres) of protected nature reserve. This natural wonderland boasts dormant volcanic cones and basaltic lava flows, making it the most sought-after volcanic landscape in the Iberian Peninsula and perhaps Europe. Immerse yourself in Catalan culture and explore the historic towns, all while surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the park.

La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park has walking routes that reveal this volcanic landscape. Explore volcanic cones and lava outcrops on hiking or cycling tours and spot wildlife such as wild boar, foxes, squirrels, rabbits, and hedgehogs. You can ascend to the summit of Santa Margarida volcano to witness a remarkable Roman chapel nestled within. Lose yourself in the enchanting beech tree forests of La Fageda and visit villages such as Olot and Besalu along the way.

  • There’s a tourist office at the park entrance where you can check maps and get more info on hiking trails.

  • Take to the trails on foot, by bike, carriage, or even donkey, passing over 40 dormant volcanoes in a seismically dynamic environment.

  • Visit in fall or winter, when it's less busy but there’s a magical atmosphere. The weather is more pleasant for outdoor activities. In the fall, the beauty and color of the trails will mesmerize you.

Located 30 miles (44 kilometers) northwest of Girona and 80 miles (120 kilometers) northeast of Barcelona, the northern part of La Garrotxa borders France. If arriving by plane to Barcelona, travel to La Garrotxa by car, bus, taxi, or guided tour. Driving from Barcelona, it's a less than 2-hour drive to Besalú and Olot. From Girona, it's a 35-minute drive to Besalú or a 50-minute drive to Olot.

The park is open year-round, but the ideal time to visit is spring and autumn. These months provide milder temperatures and fewer crowds for hiking and exploring outdoors. Summer is the busiest time, but the high temperatures can make hiking unbearable. Winter, although a quieter time of year, can be chilly and wet, but it is ideal for exploring the park's cozy villages and enjoying traditional Catalan cuisine.

Gastronomic workshops take place in La Garrotxa. You can experience milking a cow, making cheese, and tasting local products. You can learn about the area’s agricultural heritage in a hands-on experience shared with family and friends. Shop for organic produce, wines, and more.
