POINT OF INTEREST

La Corniche

Casablanca, MAR

The city’s most fashionable suburb, Ain Diab Corniche is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The district is bisected by Corniche Boulevard, from the Hassan II Mosque in the east to the El-Hank Lighthouse in the west, but the main attraction is the scenic promenade along the Casablanca seafront where everyone comes for at least a stroll.

The Ain Diab Corniche neighborhood of Casablanca is the perfect place for to enjoy a leisurely walk along the beach, or a sunset drink or meal at one of the many restaurants and bars that line the promenade. Travelers may explore the district as part of a half-day or full-day tour that includes the most important sites of Casablanca including Hassan II Mosque, the largest mosque in Morocco and the 13th largest in the world, bustling Mohammed V Square, and myriad tropical gardens, taking in the gorgeous Hispanic-Muslim and Art Deco buildings along the way.

  • Tour may include guide, roundtrip hotel transport, but not food or drink. Check specific tours for details.
  • During the summer especially, bring your sun protection, swimwear and towel to enjoy a swim.
  • The tours are not wheelchair-friendly, however, anyone can enjoy the pedestrian-only promenade.
  • As everywhere in Morocco, be sure to dress appropriately.

Ain Diab Corniche is a suburb of Casablanca along the Atlantic Coast. Arrive by taxi or drive for about 15 minutes from the center of Casablanca. Parking near the promenade is available. Or take the tramway to Ain Diab Plage Terminus. From Mohammed V Square, expect less than a half-hour ride.

The beach clubs come alive during the summer months, so expect crowds. Throughout the year, the bars and nightclubs are a draw. Casablanca can be quite hot year-round, though cool breezes come with the Canary Current off the Atlantic Ocean. In July are two of the city’s most outstanding events (Festival de Casablanca and the Feast of the Throne) or come during the spring for Ramadan to experience an array of cultural activities and festivals.

Travelers can walk to the western tip of the Corniche, where on a rocky outcrop is the mausoleum and shrine of Sidi Aberrahman, the founder of the Thaalibiya (now Algiers); a man who is considered by most Moroccans to be a saint. A special and sacred place of Muslim pilgrimage, be sure to wear appropriate dress, and be careful about timing: the white dome-shaped burial tomb is accessible only at low tide.
