POINT OF INTEREST

La Caldera

Tenerife, Tenerife, 38300

Rocky volcanic peaks and verdant pine-clad hills stretch out on the horizon from La Caldera—”The Cauldron”—at the eastern edge of La Orotava Valley. A natural monument, the scenic spot is Tenerife’s best-preserved volcanic crater and a popular destination for hiking, camping, and picnicking.

The basics

Whether you visit independently or as part of a tour, La Caldera is worth it for the views alone. Hikers can choose from several trails that start in the crater, but the most rewarding is the about 3-hour loop that circles the crater, passing through the villages of Mamio and Augamansa and Los Llanos ravine. Pack a picnic to enjoy at Caldera after the hike as you take in the views.

Things to know before you go

  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection for hiking—almost all trail is in direct sunlight.

  • There is a café, picnic tables, and a children’s playground at La Caldera.

  • Uneven ground and natural surfaces mean that access to La Caldera may be limited for wheelchairs and strollers, but the main site can be reached directly by car.

How to get there

La Caldera is located on the edge of the Orotava Valley in northeast Tenerife. The crater is just off the TF-21 and can be reached by car, about a 20-minute drive from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, or by public transport—take the 345 bus from Puerto de la Cruz, about a 90-minute journey.

When to get there

Tenerife’s balmy temperatures mean it’s best to time your hiking early or late afternoon, especially if you’re visiting in the hot summer months. Choose a clear day for the best views, and watch out on the trail after heavy rain.

Explore the valley of La Orotava

La Orotava Valley stretches along the north coast of Tenerife from the foot of the Teide Volcano to the crater of La Caldera and encompasses some of the island’s most striking landscapes. Lined with banana plantations and vineyards, highlights of the Orotava Valley include the Mirador del Humboldt viewpoint, which affords views across the entire valley; the historic town of Orotava; and several hiking trails, some with views of El Teide.
