POINT OF INTEREST

Kungsträdgarden (Kungsan)

Jussi Björlings Allé, Stockholm, SWE

Affectionately called Kungsan, this public park smack dab in the middle of Stockholm is one of the city's most important public spaces. Surrounded by restaurants and cafés, the park is an ideal place to rest after your walk through central Stockholm. It comes alive with blossoming cherry trees in spring and an ice skating rink during winter.

In an enviable location across the street from the National Museum and across the water from the Royal Palace, the park is a common stop on tours of central Stockholm. But the best way to visit is to walk through the park yourself. You can easily see the whole park in less than an hour, and grab a coffee or bite to eat at one of the resident cafes and restaurants. If you visit during the warmer months, chances are you'll see a public performance.

  • Public restrooms are on the west and east sides of the center of the park.

  • The park is free to visit and requires no tickets and reservations—perfect for last-minute plans.

  • Benches and public seating areas line most of the park, making it a great place for people-watching.

The park is in the center of Stockholm in the busy Norrmalm area, so it’s easily reachable on foot and by public transport. The park's own subway station, Kungsträdgården, serves the 10 and 11 lines of the Stockholm Metro. Bus stops line the park on all sides and the Strömkajen ferry terminal is steps away on Södra Blasieholmshamnen.

The park is bustling year-round and is considered one of the most important public gathering places in Stockholm. Visit in spring to see the cherry trees blossoms or during summer to see open-air performances on the park's covered stage. Winter is for ice skating or exploring Christmas markets on weekends in December.

A skating rink opens annually in the Kungsträdgarden from early November through the beginning of March. Built around the statue of Karl XIII in the center of the park, the rink is open to the public from early morning until late evening throughout the week. Skaters can bring their gear or rent skates, socks, and padlocks.
