Kilchurn Castle

Lochawe, Dalmally

Travel to a tiny peninsula at the northern tip of Loch Awe to visit the ruins of Kilchurn Castle, one of the most photographed sites in Scotland. Abandoned since a fire in the 1750s, the ruins are open for exploration, which can include climbing to the top of its 4-story tower. There is no attendant at the door or souvenir shop, just the scenic castle ruins in the countryside.

One castle with many lives, Kilchurn played several roles throughout history. It was the base of the Campbell clan in the 15th century and later was used to house troops during the Jacobite Risings. Information boards detailing the castle’s history are spread throughout the structure. Kilchurn Castle is part of several full-day tour options from Glasgow and Edinburgh that often include other nearby attractions such as the seaside town of Oban.

  • Kilchurn Castle is a must-see attraction for history buffs and nature lovers.
  • Wear comfortable, waterproof shoes for climbing to the top of the castle’s 4-story tower and exploring its grounds, which tend to be wet underfoot.
  • There is no direct access for cars to the castle; be prepared to park and walk to the site.
  • The castle does not have bathroom facilities.

The castle is on the shores of Loch Awe, about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from the village of Dalmally. There is a train station in Dalmally, but most visitors arrive by car or as part of a guided tour from Glasgow or Edinburgh. The castle is a 0.5-mile (800-meter) walk from the parking lot.

Visit Kilchurn Castle from April through September: it is closed the rest of the year. The most popular time to visit is during the summer months, but expect the ground to be wet no matter what month you visit. To avoid the summer swell of visitors, plan a trip during the spring months.

Kilchurn Castle is one of many popular landmarks in the west Highlands. Other nearby attractions include Loch Lomond, McCaig’s Tower in the town of Oban, the village of Luss, and the lochs of Trossachs National Park.
