POINT OF INTEREST

Keelung Harbor

No. 1 Zhongzheng Road, Zhongzheng, Keelung, CHN

Located at the northern tip of Taiwan, Keelung Harbor is the largest port of entry into the island. A narrow waterway surrounded by mountains, it's an important container and fishing port and serves both military and commercial vessels, including cruise ships. Visitors come here for the bustling markets and restaurants near the harbor.

Stroll along the wooden decks of the Keelung Maritime Plaza and enjoy the vibrant seaport scenery. Explore the narrow streets and alleys that branch out from the harbor. Shop for fresh seafood at one of the bustling markets that line the harbor, which you can then take to be cooked at one of the many seafood restaurants nearby. Don’t miss the Miaokou Night Market, with more than 200 stalls serving a large variety of local favorites such dumplings, thick crab soup, and shaved ice.

With easy transport connections to Taipei, it’s easy to visit Keelung Harbor independently. Guided sightseeing tours from Taipei are available, including ones that combine a stop here with nearby attractions such as Zhong Zheng Park and Yehliu Geopark.

  • It’s a good idea to bring an umbrella as it often rains in Keelung.
  • Bring cash if you want to shop at the markets as some vendors won’t take anything else.
  • Free WiFi is available at the port cruise terminal.

Keelung Harbor is located in the Zhongzheng District in Keelung, around 14 miles (23 kilometers) from Taipei. From Taipei Main Station, it’s about a 45-minute train ride to Keelung Station. The harbor is a short walk away. Several buses also connect Taipei to Keelung, including Kuo Kang buses.

The best time to visit Keelung Harbor is in the spring and fall, when you have the most pleasant weather and it’s most likely to be dry. The Miaokou Night Market is open late and is at its most bustling late in the evening. It can get very busy on weekends and holidays. Visit during the week for smaller crowds.

Located in the eastern part of Keeling Harbor, Heping Island is a popular tourist attraction. There’s a coastal park with a swimming pool, hiking trails, and a number of dining options. The island is also known for fossils, numerous oddly shaped rocks formed by erosion, and the only castle in the region, built by the Spanish in the 17th century.
