Kasubi Tombs
Masiro Road, Kampala, Uganda
As the burial site of four Buganda kings, the UNESCO-listed Kasubi Tombs hold important cultural and spiritual significance in Uganda. The main Muzibu Azaala Mpanga structure is made from organic materials and marks the central point of the site, which sprawls across Kasubi Hill.
The Kasubi Tombs are a popular stop on city tours. Guided exploration is recommended, as understanding the site’s significance can be tricky alone. Tours with round-trip transfers make it easy to cover more Kampala attractions in less time, while cultural tours—which tend to include Nakasero Market and the Uganda National Mosque—take you off the beaten path and reveal a side of Kampala that’s usually reserved for locals.
The Kasubi Tombs are a must-see for architectural fans, history buffs, and culture enthusiasts.
Unfortunately, many original features were destroyed by fire in 2010.
Some packages include admission; otherwise, there is a fee to enter, though this includes a tour.
The tombs are mostly wheelchair accessible, though it’s worth ensuring transfer arrangements ahead of time.
Don’t forget your waterproof jacket during the rainy season, as the site is mostly uncovered.
Take advantage of tours that offer private transportation for hassle-free transfers, or jump on the back of a boda boda (motorcycle taxi) for quick and cost-effective access. Alternatively, take a public matatu (minibus) to Kasubi Market, then walk 10 minutes uphill on Masiro Road.
Escape the heat of the day on an early morning or late afternoon visit. The later you visit, the more likely you are to catch sunset views on your return trip.
Modern Uganda is made up of several traditional kingdoms, of which Buganda is the largest. With a history reaching to the 14th century, the Buganda Kingdom continues to play an important role in Ugandan life and politics. Other Buganda landmarks in Kampala include the Mengo Palace, the official home of thekabaka (king), and theLukiiko (Buganda Parliament) building, Bulange.
