Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park

Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, Queensland

Just across the river from Brisbane’s central business district, Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park offers sweeping views of Brisbane’s skyline, as well as excellent rock climbing and rappelling—suitable for all skill levels—on its cliffs. The cliffs were formed by convicts mining the volcanic rock in the middle of the 19th century.

Explore Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park via its walking trails, or see it from the river by kayak. Rentals are available in the riverside park. Rock climbers and rappellers can visit independently, but booking a tour is the best option for those who do not have their own equipment. Tours typically tailor the experience to each individual’s level, and you can feel confident climbing and rappelling under the watchful eye of a guide.

For a different perspective on the cliffs, take a river cruise or city sightseeing tour. The park is a common stop on guided tours—ideal for those with limited time who want to squeeze in multiple attractions in one day.

  • Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park offers some of Brisbane’s best views and is a must-visit for active travelers.

  • Facilities in the park include barbecue grills, picnic tables, and a café.

  • Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.

While it’s possible to reach the park by car, the best way to visit the Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park is by taking the ferry from downtown. You can stop either at Thornton Street on the northern end of the park or at the ferry stop for the Maritime Museum, where it’s just a short stroll north.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park is a popular and romantic spot to watch the sunrise and sunset. While most climbers and rappellers visit during the day, the park is particularly atmospheric after dark when floodlights illuminate the cliffs; the lights mean that climbers can scale the cliffs even at night.

On the opposite side of the river from Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park is the City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane’s oldest and best-loved green space. The gardens offer an array of plant life, including rare and unusual flowers; ornamental ponds; picnic areas; and a concert venue. Sightseeing tours by bike and Segway commonly stop at the gardens.
