The cliffs were formed by convicts mining the volcanic rock in the middle of the 19th century.

On the opposite side of the river from Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park is the City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane’s oldest and best-loved green space. The gardens offer an array of plant life, including rare and unusual flowers; ornamental ponds; picnic areas; and a concert venue. Sightseeing tours by bike and Segway commonly stop at the gardens.
