Kalamaki Beach

Kalamaki, Greece

Located along the southern coast of Zakynthos Island, Kalamaki is a quiet beach with a long stretch of fine golden sand and warm, shallow waters ideal for families. A nesting area for the endangered Caretta-Caretta loggerhead turtles, the beach is protected as part of the National Maritime Park of Zakynthos.

Kalamaki Beach is an ideal destination for visitors looking for a quiet, uncrowded beach experience on Zakynthos. Visitors can stroll along the long sandy beach, relax, sunbathe, swim, snorkel, kayak, rent a pedalo boat, or ride a horse. Umbrellas and sun loungers are available for rent from a few places along the beach. There are also a few beachfront restaurants, with more options for restaurants and shops within walking distance of Kalamaki.

  • Portions of the beach may be closed off to protect the nesting turtles.

  • There is a nudist section towards the east end of the beach, behind some tall rocks.

  • Visitors bringing umbrellas and sun loungers should set up near the waterline to avoid damaging turtle nests.

Kalamaki Beach is located south of the town of Kalamaki, on the southern coast of Zakynthos. Several walking paths lead from the town to the beach. Kalamaki is 1.9 miles (3 kilometers) from Zante Airport and 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) from Zante Port. Taxis and motorbikes offer easy access. There is also a shuttle bus that runs around town.

Kalamaki Beach rarely gets too crowded, though it is most popular during the summer beach season. To protect the turtles, the beach is only open from sunrise until sunset and beachfront restaurants are closed at sunset. During non-peak season, the beach may have limited to no facilities, including rentals.

Located next to Kalamaki Beach, Laganas Beach offers a livelier beach experience. There are more rental options for umbrellas and sun loungers, kayaks, pedal boats, and motor boats, along with beach bars, restaurants, and shops. Visitors can also walk across a wooden bridge to Cameo Island or take a boat ride to Turtle Island.
