Kailasagiri

Visakhapatnam, India

Spread across a coastal hilltop in the Andhra Pradesh city of Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, Kailasagiri is an expansive park offering great views of the city and the Bay of Bengal. Highlights of this 350-acre (102-hectare) expanse include manicured gardens with a flower clock, giant statues of Lord Shiva and his consort Paravati, and an aerial ropeway offering scenic views.

Other spots worth checking out in the park include the Sri Kailashnath Temple and several vegetarian food stalls. Many visitors to Kailasagiri start at the base of the park, where there’s a stairway and a ropeway (accessible for a fee). Kailasagiri is a popular spot on Vizag excursions, which range from guide-led tours that show you the highlights to semi-independent transportation-only experiences.

  • Kailasagiri is a must-see for photographers and nature lovers.

  • Be prepared for lots of sun. A good sunhat and sunscreen are crucial.

  • Facilities in Kailasagiri include public restrooms and food vendors.

  • If you plan to enter temples on the hill, wear modest clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.

Kailasagiri is located on the eastern end of Visakhapatnam, about a 25-minute drive from the Visakhapatnam Railway Station and 35–40 minutes from the Kailasagiri is located on the east end of Visakhapatnam, about a 25-minute drive from the Visakhapatnam International Airport. Taxis and tours can take you up to the top of the hill or drop you at the Ropeway Base Station at its foot.

If you want to avoid crowds and hot temperatures, plan your Kailasagiri visit for first thing in the day. Sunset is also an excellent time to visit owing to the views alone. The weather in Visakhapatnam is hot throughout the year, with slightly cooler temperatures between November and February. If you come between June and October, expect plenty of rainfall.

Located in the Simhachalam Hills outside of Visakhapatnam, the Sri Varaha Lakshminarasimha Temple is among the city's most prominent pilgrimage centers. It dates to the 13th century and is devoted to Lord Vishnu. While most visitors are religious pilgrims, this historic temple is of equal interest to architecture and design fans, with its beautifully carved vimana, a tiered roof covering the inner sanctum.
