Kabukiza Theatre

4 Chome-12-15 Ginza, Tokyo, Japan, 104-0061

Kabukiza Theatre is often touted as one of the best places in Tokyo to watch kabuki—a type of Japanese performing arts that dates back to the early 17th century. With translations available, it’s a great choice for tourists keen to experience this traditional form of theater.

The basics

Most visitors come to the Kabukiza Theatre to see one of its daily shows; you can book tickets either online in advance or at the on-site box office. There’s typically a morning and an afternoon show, but the schedule tends to change depending on what’s showing.

Alternatively, you can visit the Kabukiza Theatre during guided walking tours, which can be private or shared, and often focus on themes such as architecture or theater. There are also tours focussed on kabuki specifically that offer insight into this traditional Japanese art form. Some tours also include stops at the Kabukiza Gallery—the on-site shrine—and Kobikicho Square, where visitors can purchase kabuki-themed souvenirs.

Things to know before you go

  • If you haven’t got the attention span for a long show, then single act tickets might be a good option. These are available on the day at a dedicated ticket window.

  • Shows are typically in Japanese but there are English captioning devices you can rent that translate the dialogue. If booking online, choose the option to add an English Captioning Service to your order.

  • There is an on-site museum and gift shop.

  • The theater is accessible to wheelchair-users with wide pathways and smooth tiled floors.

  • There are food shops, a convenience store and gift shops available at the underground marketplace area that’s attached to the nearby Exit 3 of Higashi-Ginza station.

How to get there

Kabukiza Theatre is located in Tokyo’s Ginza district, which is easily accessible via public transportation. The nearest subway station is Higashi-Ginza Station, only a couple of minutes away on foot, served by the Hibiya and Asakusa lines. Alternatively, it’s around a 6-minute walk from Ginza Station.

When to get there

For the best experience at Kabukiza Theatre, it's recommended to book tickets in advance to secure your preferred seating. Weekday matinee performances often have better availability than evening shows. The program typically changes monthly, so be sure to check the theater’s website before booking for up-to-date information on upcoming performances. It’s best to get there at least 30 minutes before a show starts if you are hoping to buy tickets on the day.

Other theaters in Tokyo

If you enjoy watching live performances, there are plenty of other notable theaters to visit after the Kabukiza Theatre. The New National Theatre is a hub for contemporary dance and drama, featuring ballet and opera performances; the Tokyo Takarazuka Theatre is known for its all-female theater group, often performing Western-style musicals; and Tokyo Opera City offers ballet and classical music recitals.
