Joliet Area Historical Museum, 204 N. Ottawa St., presents the history of Joliet through interactive displays, movies and life-size reproductions. Featuring lovely stained-glass windows, a neoclassical church built in 1909 houses the museum galleries, War Heroes Gallery, children's activity room and Special Exhibition Gallery. Exhibits explore such topics as the Illinois and Michigan Canal, Route 66, Joliet's Collins Street Prison, 100-year local marching band history, 1900s and post-World War II growth and the space exploration program. Visitors also can take a virtual ride aboard a trolley replica and experience a walk-in Lunar Lander simulator. A visitor center also is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
