John Rylands Library

150 Deansgate, Manchester, GBR

Also known as the University of Manchester Library, the John Rylands Library is widely considered one of the world’s most beautiful libraries. Built in 1900 and celebrated for its Victorian, neo-Gothic architecture—which includes a soaring, vaulted entryway and ornamental carvings—the landmark houses a vast collection of rare books.

Home to over 1.4 million books, manuscripts, and other rare holdings, the John Rylands Library is also known for its architectural beauty. Its Special Collections comprise a trove of priceless objects, including a papyrus fragment of the Gospel of John, a Gutenberg Bible, and medieval illuminated manuscripts. Its architectural highlights include the grand Historic Entrance Hall and the Historic Reading Room, which resembles a church. Now part of the University of Manchester, the John Rylands Library is used by students and researchers, and is also open to members of the public.

The John Rylands Library is featured on a range of Manchester tours, including walking tours and history-themed itineraries. It’s also easy to explore independently.

  • The John Rylands Library shop sells books and literary-themed gifts.

  • Most of the building is wheelchair accessible, except for its Historic Entrance Hall and some restroom facilities.

  • Assistance dogs are welcome in the library.

  • Photography is allowed in the library, except in the exhibition galleries; flash photography and tripods are forbidden.

The John Rylands Library is located on Deansgate, in Manchester’s Spinningfields district. It’s just a few minutes' walk from Salford Central station, served by mainline trains. The landmark can also be reached by free Metroshuttle buses and by Manchester Metrolink (take the Blue, Green, Navy, or Purple Line to St. Peter’s Square).

The library's hours vary, and it's closed on some days of the week, so it's best to check the schedule before visiting. Factor in around 30 minutes to have a look around the library. To beat the crowds, visit midweek, and get there close to the opening time.

The library hosts a wide array of events throughout the year. In addition to its rotating temporary exhibitions, it offers photography sessions, family-friendly craft and story sessions, educational talks, and more.
