John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge

Cincinnati, Ohio

The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge spans the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Covington, Kentucky. An engineering prototype for the Brooklyn Bridge with two primary cables, the structure remains an integral part and a major thoroughfare of the roadway system in the Midwest. Visitors can also walk across the bridge to take in some scenic views. The beloved historic landmark even inspired its own (now-defunct) day-long festival.

As you walk across the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, access a virtual tour to learn about its history, construction, and engineering. The Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee (CCSBC) offers a virtual version of its in-person informational tours. Scan the QR code plaques at the three tour stations at the Anchor Houses, the Towers, and the Mid Span. The narrator shares photos and drawings that explain the details of the bridge’s structure. Guided tours of Cincinnati usually include a stop at the bridge as well.

  • Visitors cannot access the top of the bridge.

  • Under the bridge, you’ll find Covington Plaza Amphitheater, which includes two hiking and biking trails, two overlooks, canoe and kayak access to the Ohio River, and a 1,350-seat amphitheater.

  • The Riverside Licking Drive neighborhood in Covington includes many local restaurants and views of the Cincinnati skyline.

From the Cincinnati side, you can access the bridge by car via Marian Spencer Way, which turns into Roebling Way. From the Kentucky side, travel along Greenup Street, which turns into Roebling Way, to drive across the bridge. If traveling by foot, you must climb two flights of stairs to reach the bridge.

Since the Roebling Bridge is a major artery, expect heavy traffic during rush hour throughout the week. If you’re visiting to see a football or baseball game, you can park in Kentucky and walk to either stadium via the bridge; this is a popular parking hack among sports fans. The bridge is also the centerpiece of BLINK, a festival of light art displays in October.

Located a quick drive across the Roebling Bridge from Cincinnati, Covington is worth a visit. Check out Goebel Park in Mainstrasse Village, known for its German-style Carroll Chimes Clock Tower and mechanical puppet show. Tour the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, a late Gothic Revival architectural masterpiece. And admire the Roebling murals by the riverfront, which depict scenes from Covington’s history.
