Jinci Temple

Considered one of the most important landmarks in Taiyuan (and all of the Shanxi province), Jinci Temple is an ideal destination for architecture enthusiasts and history buffs, as well as lovers of the great outdoors. Standing in the shadow of Xuanweng Mountain, it’s among the most scenic landmarks in the region.

The temple complex’s most impressive building is the Hall of the Sacred Mother (also known as Shengmu Hall), a lavish wooden structure that’s renowned for its carved dragon columns and painted sculptures. Also noteworthy is the Flying Bridge Across Fish Ponds, built in the Song Dynasty more than 1,000 years ago. And it’s worth visiting the Jinci Gardens’ ever-flowing Nanlao Spring, as well as those ancient trees.

• Because many of the temple complex’s attractions are outdoors, prepare for the weather—bring comfortable shoes and rain gear, if the forecast looks iffy.

• Tickets to the temple can be purchased on arrival; entry is slightly cheaper in the November–March off-season.

• Many of the signs at the Jinci Temple are written in Mandarin and English, making it easier for foreign travelers to navigate the site.

The Jinci Temple is located in the Jinyuan District of Taiyuan, roughly 30 minutes by car southwest of downtown Taiyuan, or 45 minutes by bus (take the 804 or 308 from Taiyuan Train Station). To skip driving or public transit, you can join a guided tour that includes transportation.

The Jinci Temple is open throughout the year, from morning to early evening; it closes slightly earlier during the November–March off-season. For the best experience of its lush gardens, visit between spring and early autumn. Note that the temple can be particularly crowded on holidays, including around National Day on October 1.
