Jean Lurçat Contemporary Tapestry Museum (Musée Jean-Lurçat)

4 Blvd. Arago, Angers, Payd de la Loire

The Jean-Lurçat and Contemporary Tapestry Museum (Musée Jean-Lurçat) in Angers, France, is an explosion of color housed in a former hospital building dating to the 12th century. Inside the Gothic building complex lies a collection that includes paintings, ceramics, and—most notably—tapestries by Jean Lurçat, an artist often credited as instrumental in the revival of contemporary tapestry.

Jean Lurçat used his tapestries to convey political messages. The collection comprises works of art from the 1950s to the present day, the most famous being the 10-part Song of the World (Chant du Monde). This series of tapestries is a humanist view of the 20th century and covers everything from the atomic bomb to space exploration—and, yes, they’re as epic as they sound. Other artists showcased here include Thomas Gleb and Josep Grau Garriga.

Nantes is the closest airport to Angers, around 90 miles (145 kilometers) away, and a train between Paris and Angers takes a little over an hour and a half. If staying in the Angers city center, catch a tram or bus. The closest tram stops are Saint Sergé Université and CHU Hôpital. Drivers can access free parking on-site at the museum.

With the exception of Mondays, the museum is open daily between 10am and 6pm. Summer is the best time to visit Angers, with average temperatures hovering around 67°F (19.4°C). Winters are mild, around 42°F (5.5°C), and often rainy. A visit to the Jean-Lurçat and Contemporary Tapestry Museum is a good option for rain-drenched days.

Contemporary textiles aren’t the only thing for which Angers is famous. The Loire Valley is well-known for producing some of the finest wines in the world, and a particular specialty here is Chenin Blanc. Vines have been cultivated at some local wineries as long ago as the 12th century. Consider adding a tasting tour at a nearby vineyard to your Angers to-do list.
