POINT OF INTEREST

iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Rorke's Drift, ZAF

It’s easy to see why iSimangaliso Wetland Park was South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site: Here you’ll find long swathes of beach populated by birds and sea turtles, while crocodiles, hippos, and elephants make their homes in the swamps further inland. This lush, coastal environment is best explored by boat as you discover the biodiversity for which South Africa is famous.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park is known for its large number of distinct ecosystems referred to as the “10 Jewels” of iSimangaliso. From the sand dunes of the coastal forest where sea turtles return to nest, to the bird-lovers’ paradise of the Sycamore Fig Forest, to the hippos that fill Lake Sibaya, visitors should allocate at least a day (and ideally, more) to exploration.

The park offers a twist on the classic safari experience with a range of activities. Many tours focus on a particular activity, so choose between options including scuba-diving, horse-riding, and game drives. For those looking for a longer adventure, you can opt to camp or bunk down at one of the catered lodges situated throughout the park.

  • Check the map before you go. The park is accessible for self-driving, but knowing which areas to focus on will help you make the most of your time.
  • Don’t forget your swimsuit. The park includes a long stretch of coastline on the Indian Ocean, and Cape Vidal becomes a beautiful beach at low tide.
  • Watch out for your food! Monkeys are common throughout the park, and many will go after unattended snacks.
  • Be aware of the wildlife and make sure you follow all park signage when observing the animals.

The nearest international airport is in Durban (about a 3-hour drive), while the nearest regional airport is located in Richards Bay (about a 1.5-hour drive). For those with their own vehicle, the N2 highway leads to the Kwambonambi junction, which will take you to Maphelane—the southernmost park entrance. Many tour options depart from Durban and offer return transportation.

Different seasons will offer different highlights—June to November is the season for whale-watching, while turtles nest from October to March. Other activities like game drives and scuba-diving operate year-round, but it’s a good idea to check seasonal weather averages to plan for your comfort. Ensure you check the gate closure times on the park website while planning your trip—they close in the evenings, and open early in the mornings.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park is geared for the adventure traveler. Opt for self-driving and campsite options to take your time exploring. Or, choose from the many boat tours, guided safari drives, and scuba trips available. A range of activities can build a customized experience. Just don’t forget to keep your camera at the ready: The park is home to the famous Big 5 game animals—lion, leopard, black rhinoceros, African bush elephant, and African buffalo.
