POINT OF INTEREST

Ijams Nature Center

2915 Island Home Ave, Knoxville, Tennessee

A short drive from downtown Knoxville will take you to Ijams Nature Center, a park and education center preserving over 300 acres (121 hectares) of wetlands and woods. Features include a nature center, educational programming, a crag for climbing, a lake for paddling, and over 14 miles (22 kilometers) of trails.

Hiking is one of the most popular activities here, and the trail system offers options that range from easy to challenging. Around two-thirds of the trails are also suitable for mountain bikes, which are available for rent at the Visitor Center. There are also many special events, many of which are geared toward children, from summer camps to preschool programs for little ones.

  • Ijams Nature Center is a must-do for families and anyone interested in the natural world.

  • Dogs are welcome in outdoor parts of the nature center but must remain leashed. Dog owners are required to pick up all animal waste.

  • Visiting the park is free, but there's a small parking fee.

  • The Visitor Center sells snacks, souvenirs, and trail maps.

The easiest way to Ijams Nature Center is by car or joining a tour that includes transportation. If you’re coming from farther afield, you can take I-40 to the James White Parkway (exit 388A). From downtown Knoxville, take Gay Street to Sevier Avenue until you reach Island Home Avenue. Turn right and drive for about a mile (1.6 kilometers) until you reach the park.

The park is open daily from morning until dusk. The Visitor Center is also open daily, with slightly shorter hours. The best time of year to visit is during the spring or autumn, when the weather is typically lovely, and the summer crowds have started to dissipate.

If you want to help support the nature center's efforts in a fun and educational way, consider signing up for their "Adopt an Animal" program. For a one-time donation, you can choose to adopt one of a variety of creatures, from Norman, the Virginia Opossum, to Frankenturtle, a little box turtle. As a thank you, you’ll receive a photo of your adoptee with a card discussing their backstory.
