Hong Kong Museum of History

100 Chatham Road S., Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Learn about the history and development of Hong Kong, from 400 million years ago to the 1997 handover, at the Hong Kong Museum of History. Featuring eight galleries, numerous exhibits, artifacts, life-size dioramas, and multimedia displays, the museum covers the territory’s natural, archaeological, ethnographic, cultural, and local history.

The centerpiece of the Hong Kong Museum of History is the “Hong Kong Story,” a permanent collection of eight galleries with over 3,700 exhibits, including hundreds of life-size dioramas and re-creations. Videos, graphics, and multimedia displays offer additional insights into various themes and exhibits. In addition to the permanent exhibit, the museum has a changing rotation of special exhibitions, as well as a wide range of educational programs and lectures.

  • The Hong Kong Museum of History offers free admission to its permanent exhibition; special exhibitions may charge a separate fee.

  • Audio tours are available for rent in Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and Japanese.

  • Guided tours are offered twice daily in Cantonese, and once a day on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays in English and Mandarin.

  • On-site facilities include restrooms, a gift shop, and a café.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible.

  • Free Wi-Fi is available at the museum.

The Hong Kong Museum of History is located in Tsim Tsa Tsui East. Take the MTR to Tsim Sha Tsui Station (exit B2) and walk for about 20 minutes, to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station (exit P2) and walk for about 15 minutes, or to Jordan Station (exit D) and walk for about 20 minutes. A number of buses stop near the museum.

The Hong Kong Museum of History is open daily, except Tuesdays (unless it’s a public holiday) and the first two days of Chinese New Year. The museum is rarely crowded, so it’s a good option when other attractions are busy. Many visitors combine a visit here with a visit to the Hong Kong Science Museum next door.

There are quite a few impressive exhibits at the museum. Highlights include a reconstruction of a Hakka family’s house, a re-creation of the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival (including bun towers), a double-decker tram, a full-size fishing junk, and a Cantonese opera theater.
